Early life and music career
Otu Okon Ukam (born October 12, 1988), professionally known as Reckon, is a Nigerian-American singer, songwriter, and record producer from Cross River State, Nigeria. Born and raised in Nigeria, he later relocated abroad to pursue his dreams. Reckon is currently studying Computer Science at Valdosta State University in Georgia, USA.
Reckon’s music fuses traditional African sounds with R&B/Soul, pop, and contemporary Afrobeats. His distinct style reflects his belief that uniqueness is key to success, setting him apart in a competitive industry.
His musical journey began in his village church choir, where he developed his vocal abilities. As a teenager, he performed at weddings and talent shows, sharpening his craft and fueling his passion for music. At 16, Reckon launched his career, writing and performing songs at social events. Alongside friends, they formed a group called KINGS SQUAD, which performed locally before disbanding.
In 2010, he moved to Asaba to pursue new opportunities. By 2012, he released his first single, Eyes on You, which gained local popularity and led to performances with Hot Cash Entertainments and Earthquake Records before the group disbanded. In 2013, Reckon relocated to Lagos, working as a security guard while participating in local talent shows. In 2015, he auditioned for TECNO Own the Stage, a prominent music competition featuring industry stars, including Yemi Alade, Bien of Sauti Sol, MI, and Eva Alordiah. Though he didn’t reach the finals, the experience fueled his artistic determination.
In 2016, Reckon moved to Dubai before relocating to the United States in 2019. Upon arriving, he joined the choir at Pot of Gold Outreach Ministry Church in Georgia, continuing to pursue his musical aspirations.
In 2021, he released This Love and Turn By Turn, followed by his debut six-track EP Self-Affirmation (2022), featuring songs like I Wanna Love You, Best Day, Far Away, and Different Currencies. In January 2024, he released the single Believe, which aims to inspire hope and faith, encouraging listeners to trust that answers to their prayers are on the way.
In November 2024, he released his second EP, No Luck, Just God, a nine-track project showcasing his growth and versatility. Featuring songs like Ulong, No Luck, Just God, Good On You, Take Care, Adimpiano, One And Only, No Blame Me, Bills On Me, and Dine And Wine, the EP blends messages of faith, resilience, and celebration. Its opening track, Ulong, sets the tone with a high-energy anthem built around the line, “Owenbe party hina efop, Ulong everywhere.”
Reckon draws inspiration from the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, particularly Fela’s boldness in using music as a platform for advocacy. Above all, he emphasizes his passion for uniting people through music, considering the impact of his art on others as his greatest achievement.
